The Kids are on Bikes

High school mountain bike racing takes off in Virginia.

“He fits this in with football, basketball, track, and wrestling, because he loves it,” says Campbell’s father Ken Rutherford.

With a successful first series, Hufnagel expects even more schools to field teams as the new school year starts, especially with many kids recruiting their friends.

“This is my main sport,” says Cameron Ritcher. “Getting other kids excited about biking is important to me.”

More Youth MTB

In addition to the Virginia High School Mountain Bike Series, there is a Carolina Youth Mountain Bike League that will host two races for kids this fall: September 18 at the Christ School in Arden and October 23 at Falling Creek in Tuxedo.

  • My 16 yr old son, who loves cycling, was upset that there was no cycling program in any of the high schools in Central Virginia, until we found (by accident) Miller School. I was immediately impressed with Peter Hufnagel and Andy Guptill and their plan/goal for the cycling program, as well as their top of the line sponsorships for bikes, eqpt and clothing. I was even more impressed with the academics and the people who operate Miller School. This school has professional cyclists mentoring young men to be the best in cycling. Great job Peter and Andy.
