The car/snowmobile/insert favorite vehicle here being raced is simply an extension of the player, just the same as a baseball bat, track shoes or shoulder pads. I think that since most people don't get the opportunity to pilot vehicles like these that are so on the edge as to require complete attention to both not wreck and perform well that they have no real frame of reference to describe the "sport" behind motorsports.
