Letters to the Editor

I was excited to see June’s Happy Trails feature photo of guys jumping off the James River footbridge. A few years ago, my son and I were both inspired to jump off that bridge (I know I’m too old to be doing these things, but I couldn’t resist). Just as we were about to jump off, this guy named Andrew crosses the bridge and started talking to us. We exchanged e-mails, started dating, and got married on the bridge last year.

I thought it had to be a misprint that “Middle Keeney” was listed as one of Pancho’s Pick for swimming holes in the Southeast. As a former whitewater rafting company employee and guide, I can tell you that Middle Keeney is not a place for swimming either by accident (as I have done on a couple of occasions) or on purpose. In this quarter-mile stretch, the river has dangerous hydraulics, swift currents, stiff eddy walls, and huge boulders. You have made a date with disaster should you choose to swim here. At least Pancho should have mentioned the use of a life jacket. Native Americans called the New River the “River of Death” for a reason-respect its natural forces. There are a few good swimming pools along the New River between Thurmond and Fayette Station, but Middle Keeney is not one of them.
