Day Hammocking

WHAT

It could be the most basic sport known to man (and we use the term “sport” loosely). Day hammocking combines two of founder Travis McDowell’s favorite pastimes: hiking and napping. Simply take a hike in the woods of your choice, find a nice spot to hang a hammock, and nap. That’s it. It’s like a mini-backpacking trip all in one day. Says McDowell, “The beauty of day hammocking is that you get to do less hiking and more napping.”

WHY

McDowell started carrying a hammock with him on fly-fishing trips because he found himself in the middle of the woods with nothing to do in the hot afternoon. “The worst time of day to fly-fish is in the middle of the afternoon,” McDowell says. “But it happens to be the best part of the day to take a nap.” Converts to the growing sport of day hammocking find that it gives their hike more of a purpose. Rather than just hiking to a vista and turning around, they hang a hammock, relax, and soak in the scenery.

HOW

Eagles Nest is the preferred hammock manufacturer of discerning day hammockers. Get the Singlenest hammock for $49.95. www.eaglesnestoutfittersinc.com.

It’s easy to get carried away with excessive gear, but McDowell insists that day hammockers should travel light. The essential day hammocking outfit consists of: sandals, tank top (or shirtless), fanny pack with water, snacks, and a Speedo (it’s the original banana hammock).

RULES

The only rule is that you have to leave your backyard. Otherwise you’re just napping in a hammock, and that’s not the same thing. Also, it's a good idea to hang your hammock away from the rail, particularly in well-used areas. "Getting robbed will certainly ruin one's day hammocking experience," McDowell asserts. But don't get too bogged down by rules or you'll lose the meaning of the sport.

ADVANCED

“The Singlenest is great for a light day hammocking excursion, but I’ve since moved on to the Doublenest. There are few things better in life than a tandem day hammocking experience. But it might not be for the beginner. Progress cautiously and remember to stretch.”
