In March the festivals are in Florida. While the Blue Ridge is still settling into its spring thaw, the climate is comfortably crisp and clear in the Sunshine State, and accordingly it hosts two of the Southeast’s best eclectic music fests.
The Langerado Music Festival (www.langerado.com) takes place from March 9-11 at Markham Park, an oasis of greenspace west of Ft. Lauderdale at the edge of the Everglades Conservation Area. In less than five years the event has raised its stock from a one-day street gala to a high-profile, long-weekend, camping blowout with some of the best touring acts in the country from the jam band and indie rock worlds. In between sets by Widespread Panic, Trey Anastasio, My Morning Jacket, and Medeski, Martin, and Wood, ride the park’s seven miles of singletrack.
For something a little more secluded, three weeks later the idyllic Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park hosts the annual Springfest (www.magmusic.com) from March 22-25. Located in the small town of Live Oak on the Suwannee River in the state’s north central country brush, this is a different kind of Florida.
Tall oak trees canopy the campsites and the festival’s quaint wooden stage. Through the park’s vast acreage, trails meander through the region’s diverse eco-systems, winding through hardwood mazes, upland scrub, and moist swampland. Out of the forest’s enchanted atmosphere come the strings of the new school and old world of acoustic music. This year longtime bluegrass heroes Peter Rowan and Tony Rice will mingle with hailed North Carolina neophytes The Biscuit Burners and The Avett Brothers. Other acts on the bill include perennial favorites Donna the Buffalo, Darrell Scott, and Jorma Kaukonen.
