Playlist: Jerry Douglas

Jerry Douglas, Russ Barenberg, and Edgar Meyer: Skip, Hop, and Wobble I’m not a superstitious person, but when three unrelated people tell me over the course of two days to listen to a record, I take heed. Such was the case recently with Skip, Hop, and Wobble, a recording that I can only describe as mesmerizing. Douglas, Barenberg, and Meyer are each titans on their instruments, and a recording of this magnitude is a rare event. The interplay between these virtuosos is hypnotic; even on first listen, I found myself stopping what I was doing to absorb the masterful blending of dobro, guitar, and bass. At one point, I was in my classroom with the third track, “The Hymn of Ordinary Motion,” a two-minute snippet of acoustic bliss, on continuous repeat for nearly half an hour. I was spellbound. Skip, Hop, and Wobble is a seminal recording, one that belongs on your shelf if you prize instrumental masterpieces. —Dave Stallard
