Raft Guide Olympiad

The Nantahala Outdoor Center’s Raft Guide Olympiad pits professional guides from around the region against each other in a series of downriver challenges. Guides are judged on their ability to flip their raft, swim rapids, perform water rescues, and navigate Greater Wesser Falls, a seldom-run class V+ behemoth that begs for a good insurance policy. It’s the one day out of the year when management looks the other way, letting the guides do what guides really want to do: cut loose. They compete in togas, Speedos, and bunny costumes doing all the things they tell you not to do on a guided trip. Here's a quick look at the 2007 Raft Guide Olympiad, when 25 fun-loving teams competed for cash, pride, and the cheering crowd.
