Southern Emissions

A recent study by the Regional Plan Association ranked cities by the amount of greenhouse gases its citizens emit, and 9 out of the 10 top polluting cities lie east of the Mississippi River. What’s worse, 7 out of those 10 are in the South.

Lexington, Kentucky was ranked as the worst polluter in the country, and Nashville, Tennessee didn’t fare much better. The greenest city in the nation? Honolulu, Hawaii.

The analysis only took the city’s transportation and buildings and residences into account and excluded emissions from utilities. Transportation is responsible for a third of this country’s carbon emissions, and residences are responsible for a whopping 39%, according to the study.
