“Mimi’s Run began as a humble way to honor my mother Mimi Schwartz, who passed away in 2013 from Takayasu Arteritis, a very rare form of vasculitis,” said Race Director and Founder Jamie Schwartz. “To best honor her memory, we are aiming to support those like her who are living and struggling with cardiovascular issues right here in our community.”

Every dollar raised through “Mimi’s Run” will contribute to efforts to discover new and better ways to diagnose and treat cardiovascular diseases. “The funds raised will be allocated to a promising and energetic team of researchers who will begin research on an area of vascular disease that especially affects women,” said Dr. Brian Annex, Chief of Cardiovascular Medicine at UVA. “The UVA Heart and Vascular Center has some of the most respected and highly skilled cardiologists and heart and vascular surgeons in the field. Their expertise and ongoing commitment to research and discovery allows them to treat all patients, even those with the most complex conditions.”

As the first charitable event to directly benefit the UVA Heart and Vascular Center, Mimi’s Run 5K is hoping to raise money from race registrations, sponsorships and donations to directly fund research of cardiovascular disease, which leads to the death of over 600,000 people each year in the U.S.
