Championship Battle of the Two Virginias

Whether you are a beginner or an experienced rider, you do not want to miss the Cole Subaru Crying Wolf Challenge XC Mountain Bike Race.

This year the annual Bike Race will be held on May 18th at Bluefield City Park, and is a fast paced race to the finish enjoyable for the whole family. As part of the West Virginia Mountain Bike Association (WVMBA) Points Series and the Virginia Off-Road Series, the Challenge takes place at the border of both Bluefield West Virginia and Bluefield Virginia. We call it the “Championship Battle of the Two Virginias” and for the past 5 years it has been proudly sponsored by Cole Subaru in the Bill Cole Automall in Green Valley off Route 460. With riders coming from as far away as Atlanta and Washington DC, don’t hesitate to join the growing group of overnight campers for an outdoors repose.

Not an Expert? The Challenge offers a fun day for everyone with race classifications from Beginners to Sport to Expert and even the kids get a chance to show their stuff at noon! The main race kicks off at 1pm.

Experts ride four laps for a total of 22 miles. The Sport division will be three laps (17 miles), and the Beginners will be doing a single lap of the 5.67 miles of dips, twists and turns to keep you peddling fast in an unforgettable race to the finish

Afterwards, contestants are encouraged to enjoy a great buffet meal and awards are handed out including the little brown jug, which serves as the grand prize. What is kept in that jug is a secret shared only by a handful of winners!

On the evening prior to the event, Cole Subaru invites riders to an annual Howl at the Moon get-together with barbeque, refreshments and a chance to mix with media and share experiences and get tips from veteran racers and locals alike. From the lookout point at East River Mountain to Pinnacle Rock, the splendor of Southern West Virginia and beautiful Bluefield, is the perfect destination for the Challenge. At such a high elevation, Bluefield WV, known as America’s Air Conditioned City, has long offered to hand out free lemonade when temperatures reach 90o or better. Needless to say, that doesn’t happen very often, but for a great weekend, gear up and get ready for the Crying Wolf Challenge!
