Like Hot Springs, North Carolina, Damascus, Virginia is one of the official trail towns of the A.T. Situated in the shadow of the 5,729-foot Mount Rogers near the tri-state border of Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee, Damascus welcomes hundreds of trail-weary travelers every year as they continue their some 2,000-mile march to Maine.
But the A.T. isn’t the only trail that winds through Damascus. The Iron Mountain Trail and the Virginia Creeper also find their way into the town, both taking adventure seekers on similarly scenic journeys through the windswept Virginia Highlands. Other outdoor opportunities near Damascus include Grayson Highlands State Park, the Backbone Rock Recreation Area, day hiking to the summit of Mount Rogers, and backcountry camping at Rhododendron Gap.
Did you know? Last June marked the 6th annual Iron Mountain 100K MTB Race, which begins and ends in Damascus.
