Blue Ridge Outdoors Top Towns Nominee: Lynchburg, Virginia

Only thirty miles from the A.T. and the Blue Ridge Parkway, Lynchburg, Virginia may be on of the South’s most underrated mountain towns. With a paved rail to trail downtown called the Black Water Creek Trail, Lynchburg supports a vibrant running community and is even considered by some to be a hotbed of southern ultra running. It’s also home to an innovative, year-round skiing complex at the Liberty Mountain Snow Flex Centre.

If you’re looking for paddling opportunities in the area look no further than the easy flowing James River, which flows right through the heart of town. Popular with canoeists, kayakers, and inner tubers alike, the slow flowing James can be accessed by way of a canoe ramp located below Scotts Mill Dam.
