Dupont in Danger

Dupont State Forest and the entire Division of Forest Resources in North Carolina will be transferred to the Department of Agricultural and Consumer Services on July 1. Dupont, a popular mountain biking and hiking destination, is a multi-use area with recreation as a primary management focus, but the move to the Department of Agriculture could mean less recreation opportunities and more logging. To counter the potential negative outcome of the administrative move, the Friends of Dupont Forest have asked the N.C. State Assembly to officially declare recreation as the primary focus of Dupont. Senator Tom Apodaca recently introduced an amendment to the state budget that, if passed, would make Dupont North Carolina’s first “state recreational forest.” Check out the progress of the amendment here.
