National Trails Day

This Saturday is National Trails Day, a nation-wide effort amongst trail clubs and users to spruce up their favorite parks and build new trail systems. Events are planned all over the Southeast, ranging from guided hikes to full-bore trail blazing. A couple of notable projects will benefit long distance hikers. In Tennessee, the Cumberland Trail Conference will be closing gaps in the New River section of the Cumberland Trail. In North Carolina, the Carolina Mountain Club will be working on extending the Mountains to Sea Trail at Soco Gap. In Virginia, mountain bikers will be working on building a new trail system at Meadowood Recreation Area, one of the few Bureau of Land Management areas in the east coast. Check out a project near you here.
