Professional surfer Mick Fanning fought off a giant shark during the final heat of J-Bay Open in South Africa on Sunday, and the entire ordeal was captured on video.

“I was just sitting there,” Fanning told a reporter shortly after he boarded a rescue boat. “I was just about to start moving when I felt something grab and get stuck in my leg rope. I instantly jumped away but it just kept coming at my board and began kicking and screaming. I just saw fins. I never saw teeth then I punched him in the back.”

The competition was called off shortly after the attack. Miraculously, Fanning walked with walked away without injury.
