White Nose Syndrome in West Virginia

White Nose Syndrome, a mysterious illness that has killed hundreds of thousands of bats in northeastern states including New York,  Vermont, Massachusetts, and Connecticut, is moving south into Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Scientists are still puzzled by this strange threat, which leaves bats with a white fungus on their muzzles. Other systems include bats becoming emaciated and dehydrated, as well as strange behavior patterns like flying out into daylight during hibernation season. Bats prey on many night-flying insects, so scientists are concerned increased habitat loss could have ecological consequences.
