The League of American Bicyclists recently ranked every state in the Union
for “bike friendliness.” The organization judged each state on various bike
and vehicle codes, amount of government staff working on bike issues,
adoption of Complete Streets policies, carbon emission policies, and
commitment to bike infrastructure like bike lanes and bike parking.
Washington was ranked as the friendliest bike state, while Alabama earned
the distinction of least friendly bike state. North Carolina was the highest
ranked Southern state at 20th. Virginia was close behind at 23rd.
