Conservation Comeback

Earlier this year Virginia’s Republican controlled House and Democratic Senate battled bitterly over the state budget. One of the projected casualties of a delayed compromise was funding for the Virginia Outdoors Foundation, a state organization that has protected over 400,000 acres of land through affordable easements. The organization was going to lose more than a third of its annual budget, but fortunately Governor Tim Kaine has amended the budget to replace $525,000 in funding cut by the General Assembly. Although $200,000 was still lost, the large recovery will mean all state employees can keep their jobs and the proven conservation program can continue.
