Charlie Engle, known famously as the first person to run across the entire 4,500-mile Sahara Desert, will go for a new world record this weekend in California’s Death Valley. The Greensboro, N.C.,-based Engle will attempt the fastest time of the Death Valley Cup, a combination of the 135-mile Badwater Ultra Marathon and the 508-mile Furnace Creek 508 bike ride. In July Engle posted a personal best at Badwater with a time of 25:45:11, coming in 4th overall. To take the Cup, Engle needs to ride Furnace Creek this weekend in 34:39:59 or better.
