Man on the Run

get more from BRO

In last year’s Blue Ridge All-Stars story, we told you about Michael Wardian, the tireless ultra-runner based in Arlington, Va. In 2008 he won the 50-mile Trail Championship and the 50K and 100K Road Championship titles. But the most amazing thing about Wardian is that he doesn’t let himself recover like most competitive runners. He just keeps going. Case in point, this past week he placed eighth at the Marathon des Sables, a 125-mile (shortened a bit this year due to flooding) stage race through the Sahara Desert in Morroco that is considered one of the toughest ultras in the world. How will Wardian celebrate his highest-ever finish by an American man at the race? He’s running the Boston Marathon on Monday.
