Drone used to find blind man lost in the forest for over 30 hours
Police in Connecticut used a drone to track down a blind man who was missing for 33 hours in a wooded area. After a family member reported the man missing, a drone pilot with the Vernon Connecticut Police was called in to assist with the search. After just 30 minutes of searching, the man was located.
The man told rescuers that he had walked away from his home and become disoriented due to medical conditions, ABC News reports. He endured overnight temperatures around 9 degrees Fahrenheit and was taken to the hospital for observation upon rescue.
NC native James Throneburg, founder of Thorlo brand socks, has died
James “Jim” Lewis Throneburg, 82, passed away on February 9. Throneburg invented and patented Thorlo brand activity-specific socks. Thorlo socks aspired to be “Caretakers of the World’s Feet,” and became popular with hikers and runners. In 2015, Throneburg was inducted into the Sporting Goods Hall of Fame.
A celebration of Throneburg’s life will take place at the Country Club on Saturday, February 22 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Earth just experienced the hottest January since records began
January 2020 was the hottest January ever recorded in the 141 years of data held by NOAA. According to NOAA, the average global land and ocean surface temperature last month were 2.05F above the 20th-century average, The Guardian reports.
The high January temperature follows an exceptionally hot 2019, which was the second hottest year ever recorded. According to The Guardian, the past five years and the past decade are the hottest in 150 years of record-keeping.
