Tops in the Mountains

The 12 runners of Team Norm;’s Maggots defended as champions of the Blue Ridge Relay last week, but they had to break their own course record to hold off the speedsters from Team Mizuno. Norm’s Maggots completed the 211-mile relay in 21 hours, 42 minutes, 22 seconds, shattering their own record by more than eight minutes. However, Team Mizuno, comprised of runners from Foot Rx stores in Asheville and Charlotte, led for most of the relay, which traverses the Blue Ridge Parkway and scenic backroads from Grayson Highlands, Va., to downtown Asheville, N.C.

Norm’s Maggots have won every Blue Ridge Relay since its inception in 2005. Norman Blair, owner of Jus’ Running in Asheville and celebrated runner and coach, has led workouts for two decades in Asheville. The regular group of runners who attend his weekly track workouts have become known as Norm’s Maggots.
