7 Reasons South Carolina’s Old 96 District Should Be Your Next Outdoor Getaway

1. Unbeatable Camping Views

It’s one thing to camp under the stars, and another to also wake up to a lake view. Hamilton Branch State Park boasts some breathtaking campsites, most of them with A+ scenery right outside the tent. For those wanting something a little more snug, they also offer campsites in cozy coves and nooks. Local park rangers proudly say that the sunset from this campsite is the best in South Carolina. After seeing it ourselves, we have to agree. (If you’re not a camper but still want to wake up in nature, Hickory Knob State Resort Park also offers a lodge, a restaurant, and cabins with outdoor seating and fireplaces.)

2. Trails for Everyone

Many trails are connected to the state parks for easy access, but other worthwhile excursions exist buried in the pastoral landscape. With so many routes to choose from, it’s easy to find something that suits your style. The Forks Area Trail System (FATS) offers 34 miles of looping trails to make the hike as long or short as you like. Some trails even wander past historic battlefields. The full list of trails offers options from beginner to advanced, so everyone can find a level they feel good about.

3. Step Back Into History

The Old 96 District is home to two Revolutionary War battlegrounds. The Ninety Six National Historic Site, outside of Ninety Six, SC, is home to the Star Fort, the last remaining fort of its kind. TAKE THIS sentence outWith no major renovations, it has remained in excellent condition for the past nearly-250 years. The Battle of Musgrove Mill State Historic, just off I-26 near Clinton, SC, you will learn about a unique battle story that won’t be soon forgotten. Visit historic landmarks nestled within the grounds of the parks, or go on a guided ranger tour for all the expert information.

4. Breaks on the Lakes

Each State Park in the Old 96 District has a water feature with most of them touching a lake! There’s a lot more to do than just camp beside them. Catch fish, go for a swim, or take a boat out on the water and go water skiing! If you don’t own your own boat or gear, no worries- there are several outdoor rentals nearby to help you get the most out of your visit.

5. Farm Fresh Fun

The Old 96 District boasts a wide range of farms welcoming visitors to pet farm animals or pick your own produce during the seasons! Peacocks roam freely at Emerald Farm in Greenwood, SC, where you can also pet goats and buy homemade goat’s milk soap. Pick fresh strawberries at Stewart Farms in Laurens County during the spring, then visit the pumpkin patch in the fall. Other farms include exciting activities like barn tours, ziplining courses, feeding llamas and alpacas, and more.

6. Discover a New Hobby (or Enjoy an Old One)

Besides what’s been mentioned already, there are plenty of other enjoyable activities. Enjoy the views on one of several 9 or 18-hole golf courses, or shoot clays at the Palmetto Shooting Complex, in Edgefield, SC, one of the premier shooting complexes in the Southeast.

7. Planning a Trip is Easy

When planning your trip, be sure to check out everything else the region has to offer. These travel itineraries can also help save time planning (or deciding where to eat/stay.) Check out the deals and packages for ways to save on lodging and local attractions or visit the calendar of events for tips on local festivals and performances you don’t want to miss.
