COME JOIN US ON THE RIVERFRONT IN LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA
When you have a city set along with bodies of water such as the James River, you’ll find a community that builds their culture and activities around enjoying the beautiful waterfront, and LYH is no exception! Surrounding the historic river, you’ll find businesses and local activities for residents and visitors to enjoy. Here are a few ideas.
RENT A KAYAK AND CANOE
If you’re more of an explorer at heart, why not take a kayak or canoe down the James River? A favorite among locals, you’ll often find kayakers and canoers on weekends riding down the historic river during the spring and summer months. But if you don’t own a kayak or canoe, you can book a trip with James River Adventures. If you really want to get a feel for Lynchburg’s history, James River Adventures now offers batteau boat tours on a period-accurate replica of a James River Batteau. This large 40-foot-long vessel provides ample room for up to 6 passengers to enjoy the local sights on the James River near Lynchburg.
ADVENTURE OUT ON PERCIVAL ISLAND
Maybe you prefer your adventures on land. You can still get striking views of the James River and Lynchburg on the Percival’s Island trail. This one-and-a-half-mile trail crosses over a pedestrian bridge made from a former train bridge onto the island. It even contains a second pedestrian bridge near the end of the trail that offers breathtaking views of the James River. It’s perfect for an afternoon walk or bike ride (you can rent one right next to the trail at Bikes Unlimited).
TRY OUT FLY FISHING
Whether you’re an avid fisher or are looking to pick up a new hobby, there are plenty of perfect fishing spots along the river in Downtown. In the James River, you’ll find freshwater species such as:
- Smallmouth bass
- Largemouth bass
- Sunfish variety (bluegill, redbreast and rock bass)
- Bonus content: Check out this blog post with fishing tips from Ethan Martin, owner of Tale Tellers.
If you’re looking for supplies, or even a lesson or two, fishing tips, and guided tours, you can stop by TaleTellers Fly Shop on Main Street, just a few blocks away from the riverfront. Don’t forget: you’ll need to have your freshwater fishing license!
EXPLORE BLACKWATER CREEK & HOLLINS MILL DAM
This popular park provides large shade trees, picnicking areas, fishing access, and wonderful views of Blackwater Creek and historic Hollins Mill Dam. The park also includes trail connections to the Blackwater Creek Bikeway, including the Point of Honor Trail section. Prior to 1863, the property comprising Hollins Mill Park was owned by William Hollins, who operated a water-powered mill known as Blackwater Mills. There is also a canoe/kayak launch at the Hollins Mill Park where fishers and boaters can paddle upstream for catch and release fishing.
PLAN A PICNIC AT RIVERFRONT PARK
Sometimes all you need to have a good time are the river views and a nice packed lunch. That’s exactly what Riverfront Park can offer (but you’ll have to pack your own lunch!). During the weekend, you’ll find friends and families playing sports like soccer or catch, and during the summer months, you’ll see little ones of all ages enjoying the zero-depth fountain located next to The Water Dog—a great activity after lunch!
