What guidelines and protocols have you put in place to keep visitors and employees safe during COVID-19?

With COVID-19 cases dropping, we are not currently planning to require masks in the ski line or lodge but will continue to follow guidance from the CDC and our state government. What’s new at the resort this year?

This upcoming winter season at Massanutten will be nothing short of epic. The resort will celebrate its 50th anniversary with special events all season long including a much-awaited plan for an expansion and upgrades to the ski area. These upgrades will refresh the property and elevate the guest experience, with expansions including new ski trails, expanded learning terrain, RFID Gates, and snowmaking improvements. Expansions and improvements that guests can enjoy this winter season and beyond include:

Expanded Terrain
New for the 21-22 season is a new conveyor lift and expanded beginner terrain plus the opening of a new “most difficult” terrain under the existing lift 5 line. 2022 is where the real excitement begins with the addition of two new trails, a new “More Difficult” trail and a new “Most Difficult” trail with both being served by lift 6.

New RFID Gates at Each Lift
Massanutten is partnering with Axess to provide easy and direct lift access for guests who are ready to take on the slopes. Season passes and day passcards will replace Massanutten’s traditional tickets, eliminating the need to visit the ticket window and allowing guests to get on the slopes faster. Electronic gates will be placed at each lift, where guests will scan their card to gain access based on their ticket type and time of day.

Snowmaking Improvements
Winter activities will be better than ever this year with 54 new snowmaking machines that will increase snowmaking ability while cutting down on energy use. The new, semi-automatic HKD low-energy air water snowmakers will be placed on the Diamond Jim and Paradice ski trails, allowing the resort to cover more of the mountain with snow than ever before. In addition, four automated fan-style snowmakers will be tower mounted on the Southern Comfort trail and two snowmaking pumps will be added to the heart of the snowmaking system, increasing water pressure and providing more flexibility in terms of where the resort can produce snow. Another exciting upgrade to the mountain includes a Winch Cat groomer that’ll assist in grooming on the steepest part of the mountain.

New and Improved Areas to Relax and Unwind
In addition to upgraded outdoor areas, Massanutten will also reveal improvements to its patrol room, the lodge, and Mid Mountain Grill.

Also, be sure to check out Powder Shack Ski & Snowboard Shop, located just down the road on Rt. 33 for great prices on skis, snowboards, helmets, and more.

What do you offer for beginners who want to learn how to ski or snowboard?

Lessons will be offered as private and semi-private (from the same traveling party) due to COVID. Unfortunately, traditional group lessons, Mountain Cruisers, Mini-Riders, or multi-week Learn to Ski (LTS) programs will not be available this year. We will offer our season-long race and freestyle programs. Lessons can be purchased by phone at 540.289.4921.

If this changes, we will update our offerings at Ski & Snowboard Group & Private Lessons in Virginia (massresort.com).

What are the best runs and why?

The 4,100-foot-long, black-diamond-rated Paradice is a local favorite, boasting moguls on one side and outstanding views the entire way down.

Do you offer any family-friendly activities?

As one of the East Coast’s premier family-friendly resorts, we are proud to offer a wide range of activities that all families can enjoy. Check out the award-winning Massanutten Indoor WaterPark, slide down our 900-foot-long snow tubing hills, race the clock in one of our three escape rooms, spin around the Ice-Skating Rink, or enjoy an Evening Show. The possibilities are endless!

Outdoor enthusiasts and adventure buffs will enjoy Massanutten’s Mountain Bike Park, Ridge Rappelling & Rock-Climbing Excursion, Canopy Tour, and hiking Massanutten’s Western Slope in the warmer months. Families will enjoy returning in the summer to check out our brand-new Outdoor WaterPark expansion featuring three brand new slides (MASS Mayhem, Peak Plunge, and Valley Vortex), an enhanced kiddie area, a gathering and observation area, and a new outdoor bar for the adults.
