According to a recent release by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC), officials in Washington County, Maryland, want to build a 190-foot communication tower right near the Appalachian Trail, permanently marring the area’s well-known rolling scenic views.
The tower would also obstruct viewsheds in the C&O Canal National Historical Park, Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, and South Mountain State Park. The National Park Service has proposed alternatives, but county officials have reportedly rejected offers. The ATC is asking residents of Washington and Frederick counties to encourage officials to change course and protect the integrity of the natural landscape.
