Squeeze in Your Last Summer Getaway Before School Starts in Pocahontas County!

Visit one of the county’s five West Virginia State Parks – Cass Scenic Railroad, Watoga, Droop Mountain Battlefield, Beartown or the Greenbrier River Trail – and enjoy the wonderful summertime activities that each park offers.

From science and history to music and literature, there are plenty of family-friendly activities to add to your trip. Take a tour of Pearl S. Buck’s Birthplace, enjoy a town tour at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park or explore West Virginia’s Civil War history at Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park Museum.

Hit the open road and spend some time exploring the scenic routes through Pocahontas County! Our sprawling roadways follow the natural mountain peaks, winding valleys and flowing rivers of the area and will lead you to beautiful countrysides and famous attractions. Hike one of the trails along the Highland Scenic Highway, including the High Rocks Trail and Honeycomb Rocks!

With hundreds of miles of legendary trails, Nature’s Mountain Playground has a route for every family. Explore the woodland scenery of one of West Virginia’s most successful rail-to-trail conversions, the Greenbrier River Trail. Extending 78 miles, the trail features some of the most secluded areas in the state and offers leisurely hiking and biking opportunities.

Soak up the last days of summer on the water. Take a trip to Watoga State Park and splash around in the park’s lake on a rented paddleboard, canoe or kayak. Located nearby, the Greenbrier River is the perfect spot for swimming, tubing and boating. Cool off at Snowshoe Mountain Resort with the inflatable adventure course on Shaver’s Lake. The resort also offers mountain biking, hiking, a bungee jumping station, off-road RZR tours and more!

No trip is complete without a place to stay!  After a long day spent adventuring, kick back in a cozy log cabin near the woods. Enjoy all the comforts of home at a quaint bed-and-breakfast or an accommodating hotel. And for those hoping to stay close to all the activities, Snowshoe Mountain Resort has many great lodging options, too!

The summer months are perfect for late-night stargazing. And luckily in Nature’s Mountain Playground, the stars shine brighter. Camp at one of our newly designated Dark Sky Parks – Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park, Watoga State Park and Calvin Price State Forest – for a truly awe-inspiring experience. Other great spots to view the clear sky is along the Highland Scenic Highway and from the Thorny Mountain Fire Tower in Seneca State Forest.

For even more family fun, add an upcoming event to your trip itinerary! Throughout the month of August, enjoy an outdoor immersive theater performance at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park with “The Ballad of Cass.” Head to Snowshoe Mountain Resort for the Taste of the Mountain on August 20 or attend the Green Bank Observatory Star Party on August 27. And don’t miss the Labor Day Weekend Celebration and Fireworks Show at Snowshoe Mountain Resort on September 2-4.
