Patagonia’s Next Round of Sustainable Beers

A few years ago, Patagonia got into the beer game, teaming up with craft pioneers like Dogfish Head and Sierra Nevada to offer a range of easy-drinking brews, mainly light lagers and ales.

What all the beers have in common is the use of Kernza, a regenerative perennial grain with long roots that can sequester carbon, help build topsoil, and prevent erosion.

The eco-minded outdoor apparel mainstay—which releases beer through company offshoot Patagonia Provisions—has since found a steady collaborator in Oregon-based Deschutes Brewery, and the partnership has yielded two tasty brews currently on shelves.

There’s Organic Kernza Lager, a light craft lager with floral and lime notes that’s perfect for the onset of spring, and for those looking for an NA option there’s Non-Alcoholic Organic Golden, which took home a gold medal at last year’s Great American Beer Festival.

Both beers are made with organic ingredients, the aforementioned Kernza, as well as Helios and Adeena hops and malted 2-row barley, and drinking either one in the next couple of months supports a good cause—as Deschutes is donating a portion of beer sales in March and April to the Land Institute, a nonprofit supporting sustainable agriculture.
