Will Harlan, Editor-in-Chief: Will has served as editor-in-chief of Blue Ridge Outdoors since 2002. He wrote the New York Times bestselling book Untamed: The Wildest Woman in America, and he has won several ultramarathons, including the Mount Mitchell 40-Mile Challenge and the Caballo Blanco 50-Miler in Mexico’s Copper Canyons.

Jedd Ferris, Senior Editor: Jedd has been with Blue Ridge Outdoors since 2003, when he was hired as a staff writer. These days he spearheads the magazine’s music coverage and writes about weird outdoor news.


Ellen Kanzinger, Travel Editor: Ellen grew up on the beaches of North Carolina before moving to the Blue Ridge Mountains. In her spare time, you can find her by the water or on a trail, always with her camera in hand.

Justin Forrest, Digital Content Editor: Based in our Asheville office, Justin is a laid-back outdoorsman/nerd who wears his man bun with pride and loves catching trout on fly. As the digital content editor for BRO, he helps keep the digital side of things fresh and moving forward. When he’s out of the office, you can find him biking or fishing in Pisgah National Forest.


Mason Adams (@MasonAtoms on Twitter) grew up hiking, biking and camping in Virginia’s Douthat State Park and the Tennessee side of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. In 2001 he moved from a fledgling career in wildlife to journalism and has been covering Blue Ridge communities ever since. He lives with his family and a herd of dairy goats, chickens, cats and dogs in Floyd County. He covers stories about culture, politics, business and the environment for a variety of publications.


Anna Katherine (Clemmons) Clay is a freelance writer and adjunct professor in the Department of Media Studies at the University of Virginia. She is a 13-year veteran writer, reporter and producer for ESPN, where her reporting adventures have included riding through corn fields on a combine harvester with Oakland Raiders wide receiver Jordy Nelson and witnessing a backyard game of H-O-R-S-E between former NBA great Dell and current two-time NBA MVP Steph Curry (she won’t reveal who won).

Ky Delaney is a lawyer, writer and activist. Her writing has appeared in the anthology The Best Travel Writing and Panorama: The Journal of Intelligent Travel. She’s currently writing her first book about how female pirates in the 1700s inspired her to set sail with two women and her four-year old.

Dan DeWitt moved to Brevard, N.C., in 2017 after nearly 30 years working as a reporter and local news columnist at the Tampa Bay Times in Florida. He and his wife, Laura, are avid hikers and cyclists who love living in the mountains and want to do all they can to keep them beautiful.

Phil Morgan is a Catholic, a family man, a language teacher, and a writer. A lover of Latin America, the outdoors, and house projects, Morgan resides in Pisgah Forest with his wife and baby boy. His favorite writers are Paul Theroux, Jon Krakeur, and Mark Twain.

Wally Smith is a conservation biologist living and working in the mountains of southwest Virginia. Originally from north Georgia, Wally is an avid hiker and runner. When he’s not on foot, he can usually be found cruising the trails by bike.

Natalie Stickel loves telling stories about the world, our place in it, and how environment informs identity. She enjoys connecting with others through nature as an outdoor educator and river guide in Richmond, Va. You can usually find her on the James, on her bike, or dancing with fire.

Ryan Wichelns is a climber and freelance writer originally from upstate New York. He currently calls his Jeep and any place with free wifi home, in pursuit of the world record for most eggs cooked in Walmart parking lots.
