Guitar slinger Daniel Donato and his Cosmic Country backing band have been burning up the festival circuit. The twang expanders performed at Rooster Walk in Martinsville, Va., back in May and, earlier this month, played a heralded set on the opening night of Tennessee mega-fest Bonnaroo, before the rest of the event was cancelled due to weather.
Later this summer, Donato—known for taking traditional country music on psychedelic joyrides—will release a new album, “Horizons,” on August 22.
A first taste of the record recently dropped, with first single “Broadside Ballad” now on the streamers. The track is a swaggering honky-tonk tune, with Donato offering fluid Tele riffs and some cautionary lyrics about the pitfalls of hubris.

Donato’s road-warrior ways will continue through the rest of the year. He’s going to celebrate the album release with his first headline gig at Nashville’s venerable Ryman Auditorium on the day the record comes out. He’ll also be back in the Blue Ridge this fall, opening for Old Crow Medicine Show at Charlottesville’s Ting Pavilion on October 23.
