The North Carolina Department of Transportation recently released the findings from their environmental study concerning the controversial Corridor K, a proposed ten mile stretch of superhighway cutting through the Nantahala National Forest. The DOT’s in house environmental study claims the projected highway would have “little environmental impact” on the area.
A coalition of environmental groups, led by the Southern Environmental Law Center, say the project would pose a dire threat to local water quality and wildlife habitat. The projected route for Corridor K (which was conceived 40 years ago) would cut a 2,870-foot tunnel through the Snowbird Mountains, and cost taxpayers $378 million.
SELC is proposing an alternative that includes cost effective improvements to the existing highways in the region.
