A recent study performed by Texas State University ranks all 50 states by the amount of litter found in their public spaces like parks and highways. The study is the first attempt to measure the amount of litter each state sees. The researchers also were able to discern that “men, youth, rural dwellers, and single persons litter more than women, seniors, urbanites, and married persons.” Shockingly, campers also made the “most likely to litter” list.

So which states are dealing with the most discarded trash? Sadly, several Southern states, including Alabama, West Virginia, and Tennessee, made the worst offenders list.
