Outdoor Updates: It’s now easier to report suspicious or illegal activity on the Appalachian Trail

It’s now easier to report suspicious or illegal activity on the Appalachian Trail

In response to the recent fatal stabbing on the Appalachian Trail, the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, a non-profit that oversees maintenance and educational outreach of the trail, has made changes to its website to make it easier to find help and report illegal activity. The non-profit redesigned their safety and crime prevention page to include a large 911 button, a phone number to the National Park Service and an incident reporting form that can be submitted via a mobile device. In the past, the incident reporting form was a PDF that had to be downloaded.

There is only one full-time law enforcement ranger assigned to the Appalachian Trail, which sees nearly 3 million visitors each year.

Asheville, NC ranks second in number of breweries per capita

Asheville, NC has fallen behind Portland, Maine in a ranking of cities with the most breweries per capita. The poll, conducted by a Chicago-based market research group, found that Asheville has 17 breweries per every 50,000 residents while Portland, Maine has 18 breweries per the same number of residents. The firm only counted breweries within the city limits and included cider makers, too.

Greenville, SC grabbed a spot on the list at number 7 with 10 breweries per 50,000 people and Charleston, SC ranked number 16 with 7 breweries per 50,000. Lancaster, PA squeaked onto the list, securing spot 24 with 6 breweries per 50,000 residents.

Free fishing in West Virginia on June 8 and June 9

West Virginia will celebrate national fishing and boating week with a free fishing weekend June 8 and June 9. During this special weekend, no fishing license is required, making it a great time for those interested in learning how to fish to get out there and give it a try.

The Division of Natural Resource (DNR) is also organizing fishing derbies around the state for youngsters on June 8. The largest fishing derby is taking place at Bowden Fish Hatchery. Kids participating in the Bowden Fish Hatchery derby will be provided with bait and poles if they don’t have them and are permitted to fish in three stocked hatchery ponds. Each angler will be allowed to take home two trout.
