Pennsylvania dog defends owner from rabid raccoon while hiking

Rabid Raccoon Attacks Owner of Hero Dog

A 60-year-old man and his black lab, Fasha, were hiking in the Pocono Mountains on the Pennsylvania side of the Delaware Water Gap Recreation Center when a rabid raccoon “came out of nowhere” and began lunging at the man’s legs.

The man fell and was bitten several times by the raccoon before the dog sprung to action, pulling the raccoon off of the man and immobilizing it. The raccoon subsequently tested positive for rabies. The man was taken to an area hospital where he will receive proper treatment. Fasha the dog was uninjured.
