UNC-Chapel Hill student dies while hiking in Utah

Sally Sasz, a 21-year-old student at UNC-Chapel Hill and Charlotte, NC native, passed away while hiking in Utah on July 6. Sasz was in California visiting a family friend, then traveled to Utah over the weekend to hike with another friend, the Charlotte Observer reports. There is no official cause of death, but Sasz’s father told the Observer that heat was the most likely cause.

Sasz was a Morehead-Cain merit scholar at UNC and was described by friends as a “bright light.” She grew up in Charlotte and attended Charlotte Country Day School, where she competed in varsity tennis and basketball and was the president of Country Day’s National Art Honor Society.
