Weekend Picks: Charlottesville Marathon and Expo

This weekend is one of the greatest running events of the Mid-Atlantic…the Charlottesville Marathon, Half Marathon, 8K, Kid’s Mile and Expo.

The 12th annual Miller Lite Charlottesville Marathon, Whole Foods Half Marathon, Virginia Blood Services 8k and Whole Kids Mile are expected to draw over 2,300 runners to Charlottesville on April 4th and 5th, 2014. For more information on the Charlottesville Marathon or on Lite Up The Mall, visit charlottesvillemarathon.com.

The course is rated one of the Top Destination Marathons in the country by the New York Times and one of the most scenic marathon courses in the East by Running Times Magazine.

cvillemarathoncrowdBad to the Bone Endurance Sports, creators of the Charlottesville Marathon, is partnering with Miller Lite to enhance the runners’ experience.  “Lite Up The Mall” will take place during the pre- and post-race Expo and include a the Miller Lite beer garden, live local bands and a great lineup of vendors in the unique atmosphere of the Charlottesville Downtown Mall.  The Charlottesville Running and Fitness Expo will take place from 12 noon to 8pm on Friday April 4th and from 8am to 1pm on Saturday, April 5th.  Runners will receive a complimentary beer ticket on their bib number; since the Expo is open to the public, the beer garden will attract runners and non-runners alike from the lively Downtown Mall, a Charlottesville destination for great local beer and night life.  All proceeds from the beer sales will benefit the Virginia Blood Services.

After the Expo, many of the businesses supporting the race on the Downtown Mall will open their doors to the public with Marathon specials.  Participating restaurants and shops will display the “LITE Up the Downtown Mall” poster in the window.cvillemarathondog

“We are really happy to have the support of the community behind the Marathon”, says Alyssa Godesky, Director of Marketing and Operations for Bad to the Bone Endurance Sports. “The new Marathon course was designed to showcase the best of the City of Charlottesville and “LITE up the Downtown Mall” takes that one more step and brings runners further into the community.”

“We expect the positive economic impact to the City of Charlottesville and to the Downtown Mall to be over one million dollars,” says Dr. Francesca Conte, President of Bad to the Bone Endurance Sports.  “The Marathon, in conjunction with “Lite Up the Mall” and the race-associated festivities bring visitors to and boost the Town’s economy after a long winter: we hope the runners will enjoy the huge Charlottesville welcome!”
