Hike to a mountain overlook, descend some flowy tech trails on your mountain bike, jump in a lake, or just relax and get pampered in one of the many spas. Or you could do them all in Berkeley Springs, WV. You don’t have to choose between chilling out or chasing adventures on this getaway. 

As a destination for nearly three centuries, this historic mountain town has plenty of practice welcoming visitors and making them feel good. After all, Berkeley Springs, WV, is known as the country’s first spa.

The warm mineral springs bubble up in the middle of the enchanting small town of Berkeley Springs. These legendary springs offer more than a half-dozen ways to enjoy the healing waters. You can wade in the spring waters or soak in the historic Roman Baths that date to the early 19th century. Experience the region’s most advanced bodywork in four contemporary spas. Reservations are available daily for treatments like LaStone massage, acupuncture, Thai or deep tissue massage, mud wraps, Reiki, and more. Berkeley Springs boasts it has three times as many massage therapists as lawyers. Relaxing is serious business around here!

Walking around the historic town of Berkeley Springs, you will feel a welcoming and artsy vibe. Friendly faces of shop owners greet you as they offer local fine art, soaps made with the local spring water, antiques, and homeopathic medical remedies.

Members of the area’s vibrant arts community have their work displayed and for sale in several locations around town. There is live music every weekend in several restaurants or brew pubs. The Ice House Art Center has live theater and gallery shows year-round. If you visit in the summer, don’t miss the free concerts in the park every Saturday afternoon. 

Weekend visitors can catch a movie at the historic Star Theatre. Midway Bowling offers 14 lanes of 10-pin bowling with cosmic bowling on weekends, video games and a snack bar.

In addition to the legendary spas, the region is also a fantastic destination for outdoor fun and backroad country tranquility. There are two rivers, a pair of mountain ranges, miles of hiking trails, hunting and fishing locales, and lots of peace and quiet.  

Visit the C&O canal and walk through the Paw Paw Tunnel, Hike to Prospect Rock–one of George Washington’s favorites or drive to one of the best panoramic views in the East.

 Cacapon Resort State Park has recently built miles and miles of world-class mountain bike trails. The park also offers an 18-hole golf course designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones, a lake with a beach, fishing, and wobble clay shooting. Horseback riding is also available at the park or Good Luck Stables.

By now, you’re probably planning your adventures in Berkeley Springs. You have the car pointed towards West Virginia and are looking for the perfect place to stay. From romantic to rustic, you’ll find a place that fits your plans. Choose B&Bs with lace and antiques or a room at the Country Inn next to the park in town. On the mountains, you’ll find cabins and houses, glamping tents, or primitive camping sites tucked among the trees.

When should you visit? Anytime. In Berkeley Springs, each season has its own delights, and you can always eat well, bathe in comfort, sleep, shop, and play outdoors
