Duke University is trying to be carbon neutral by 2024, and fortunately the bright minds at North Carolina’s prestigious school aren’t just buying a bunch of off-set credits. In fact, the university is developing a very interesting source of alternative energy—pig poop. Duke is developing a prototype facility at Lloyd Ray Farms in Boonsville, N.C., that will not only manage the methane from hog waste—21 times more potent as a greenhouse gas than carbon-dioxide—but also generate renewable energy.
