I had the opportunity to check out the Red River Gorge Geological Area in Kentucky recently for an upcoming feature. The Red, which has the highest concentration of sandstone arches East of the Mississippi, has been on my “to do” list for years. I’d seen pictures, but I’ve been dying to check out these rock features in person. The trouble with these sort of trips that have been built up in your head for so many years, is that the reality of the place can often pale in comparison to your idea of the place. Disappointment is almost inevitable. I’m happy to say the Red did not disappoint. If anything, it exceeded my expectations. It is truly a gem in the rough.
