Bikes for Everyone

The first bike share program in the country is set to launch in Washington D.C. this May. Smart Bike D.C. will start with 100 share-use bicycles at 10 locations throughout D.C.’s business district. For an annual subscription of $39, you can unlock a bike from an automated kiosk, ride it wherever you want, and return it to any of the 10 kiosks scattered throughout the city.

This sort of share bike system is popular in European cities and volunteer run share bike programs have begun taking hold in some progressive American cities, but this is the first professionally run program in the U.S.
