Team Dagger’s Martina Wegman Places First Overall in Whitewater Grand Prix Competition

Team Dagger athlete Martina Wegman  took first place overall in the women’s division at the 3rd annual Whitewater Grand Prix (WWGP) in Quebec and Ontario, Canada on May 11.

The 2014 competition, now in its third year, was held on Canada’s Mistassibi, Rogue, Shawinigan, Ottawa and Basse Cachee Rivers, and has grown to be celebrated as one of the most challenging and respected whitewater events in paddling. The world’s best kayakers in all disciplines compete in six events over the course of fourteen days.

The two-week event has a component of adventure and exploration that isn’t found in most organized kayak events. Decisions about which sections of rivers to run are made at the last minute based on flows and river conditions, requiring athletes to be ready for anything, and making it both more fun and more challenging.

Wegman placed 1st in the Time Trials and Boatercross events, 2nd in the Giant Slalom, 3rd in the Big Wave Challenge and Freestyle Showdown, and 4th in the Single Trick contest for an overall best score of 34 points. Check out the following video from the event.
