Trail Mix – January 2017

And we’re back!

It’s the first month of a brand new year, so that can only mean that a brand new collection of killer tunes has been queued up for your streaming and downloading enjoyment. Over the next twelve months, you can count on Trail Mix to deliver you somewhere in the neighborhood of 360 tunes, all for free, that will – hopefully – turn you on to some new to your ears roots artists!

Let’s get started.

Featured this month is a track from the second record to be released by Dead Man Winter, the side project – but now primary focus – of longtime Trampled By Turtles front man Dave Simonette. After fourteen years of touring, Trampled By Turtles are in a bit of a hiatus and Simonette has turned his attention squarely on this project, which first released a long player back in 2011. This long awaited second record from Simonette’s electrified folk rock outfit doesn’t disappoint. For proof positive, check out “Furnace” right here in the mix.

This month’s mix also includes two incredible discoveries – Horse Thief and Moon Hooch – and two old favorites in The Wood Brothers and Susto. These four artists, perhaps, suggest best what Trail Mix is all about; the discovery of new music and the reintroduction to bands long loved.

Fans of killer acoustical bluegrassy music will be especially excited about this month’s mix, which welcomes back long time friends The Infamous Stringdusters, whose brand new record Laws of Gravity drops this month on Compass Records, and Jon Stickley Trio, whose new EP, Triangular, showcases their better-than-most ability to sonically shape shift.

Another track on this month’s mix that is particularly interesting is “Beautiful Scars,” from Kings And Kings, the brand new record from Blackie & The Rodeo Kings. This new release features these Canadian greats collaborating with a variety of iconic musicians, including Jason Isbell, Vince Gill, Raul Malo, Keb Mo, and others. “Beautiful Scars” features the talents of fellow Canadian stars City & Colour and the track is simply stunning.

Be sure to check out the brand new cuts from Brigitte DeMeyer & Will Kimbrough, John Wesley Coleman III, Paula Boggs, Battleme, Matthew Squires, Ryan Oxford, Whitney Rose, John Craigie, and The Gods Themselves.

And stay tuned to the Trail Mix blog. This month, chats with upstart bluegrassers Circus No. 9, Richmond folkie Jonathan Vassar, and long time fiddle great Rayna Gellert are on tap.

Be sure to tell a friend or two about this month’s mix. And next month’s. In fact, make it your goal to share an artist or you to discover every month with someone you know. Turn your friends and family on to musicians you discover here and help spread the love to these great artists who share their music on Trail Mix.
