Blue Ridge Outdoors Top Towns Nominee: Charlotte, North Carolina

Charlotte’s easy access to outdoor recreation makes it a metropolitan mecca for adventure. The U.S. National Whitewater Center is located within the city limits of Charlotte and situated adjacent to the Catawba River, this 400-acre facility features an re-circulating whitewater river, as well as 14 miles of mountain biking trails, and a 46-foot open-air climbing wall.

At 98 acres, Charlotte’s Freedom Park features city owned rental bikes and a well-maintained network of walking, running, and biking trails. Crowders Mountain is just a stone’s throw from the city, offering miles of trails and outstanding bouldering. Some other outdoor highlights in the Charlotte area are Lake Norman, the McDowell Nature Center, the Little Sugar Creek Greenway, and Renaissance Park.

Did you know? The U.S. National Whitewater Recreation Center in Charlottes also serves as the official training facility for whitewater slalom racing.
